who we serve

People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD)

IDD is a medical and neurological diagnosis.  The Colorado definition of IDD meets the following criteria:

  • Diagnosis has occurred before the age of 22  
  • IQ of 70 or less (as measured by specific testing/evaluations) and/or
  • Adaptive (daily living) skills that are equivalent to an IQ score of 70 or less (as measured by specific testing)

IDD includes the following special education categories:
  • Intellectual Disability
  • Multiple Disabilities (Intellectual Disability & another disability category)
  • Developmental Disability (age 8 and younger if intellectual/adaptive skills are identified)
  • When the IQ and/or adaptive skills are 70 or less:
    • Autism Spectrum Disorder
    • Other Health Impairment
    • Traumatic Brain Injury

what we do

  • Provide advocacy to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
    • 3 levels of support:
      • Level 1 – Information, resources, and referral
      • Level 2 – Technical assistance (document review)
      • Level 3 – Direct contact with team/attend meetings
  • Empower families to navigate the different systems involving the needs of the child/youth
    • Model effective strategies when working with school teams
    • Host gatherings
    • Resources/materials on a wide variety of topics
    • Offer trainings on a variety of topics. Develop new ones as needed.
  • Support professional/colleagues in the field
    • Collaborate with other agencies to host events
    • Provide trainings as requested

Trainings and presentations may include, but are not limited to: Special Education, IEP’s and 504’s, Transition between age levels, behavior training, supported decision making, disability services, communication, conflict resolution, self-care, rights and responsibilities, and guardianship.

Some examples of advocacy include:

  • Assistance in understanding,
    • the I/DD system,
    • how to apply for services,
    • advocacy to resolve any problems with your services and supports and
    • advocating for your needs and want
  • Providing resources for your wants and needs
  • Help to navigate IDEA, 504, IEPs, disability support services
  • Assistance navigating the special education system in Colorado
  • Learning to advocate for your child and understanding their rights and responsibilities.
 

Does the child qualify?

The Arc of Adams County only provides advocacy services to people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD).  The criteria for IDD are listed:

  • Diagnosis of IDD has occurred before the age of 22
  • IQ of 70 or less (measured by specific testing) and/or
  • Adaptive (daily living) skills that are equivalent to an IQ of 70 or less
  • Autism*
  • Behavior disorders
  • Brain injury
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Down syndrome
  • Fetal alcohol syndrome
  • Spina bifida

*Not all children with Autism qualify for our services 

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) there are 13 disability categories that students may be eligible to receive special education services under. Some of the common disability categories that you may see on an IEP of a student who has I/DD may include but are not limited to:

  • Intellectual Disability
  • Multiple Disabilities (Intellectual Disability & another disability category)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Developmental Delay (up to age 8)
  • Speech-Language Impairment (often seen listed as a secondary disability category with Autism Spectrum Disorders or Intellectual Disability)
