WHO WE SERVE
People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD)
IDD is a medical and neurological diagnosis. The Colorado definition of IDD meets the following criteria:
- Diagnosis has occurred before the age of 22
- IQ of 70 or less (as measured by specific testing/evaluations) and/or
- Adaptive (daily living) skills that are equivalent to an IQ score of 70 or less (as measured by specific testing)

WHAT WE DO
- Provide advocacy to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
- May include:
- Information, resources, and referral
- Technical assistance (document review)
- Direct contact/attend meetings
- May include:
- Empower individuals/family/guardians to navigate the needs of individual
- Resources/materials on a wide variety of topics
- Offer trainings on a variety of topics. Develop new ones as needed.
- Support professional/colleagues in the field
- Provide trainings and presentations
- Trainings may include, but are not limited to: police/law enforcement, guardianship, and supported decision making.
- Provide trainings and presentations
*Working with an advocate is limited in time and specific to a person’s goals and needs.
Some examples of adult advocacy include:
- Assistance understanding:
- the IDD system,
- how to apply for services,
- advocacy to resolve any problems with your services and supports and
- advocating for your needs and wants.
- Providing resources for your wants and needs
- Learning to advocate for yourself and understanding your rights and responsibilities.
*Advocacy varies as it is time limited and specific to goals.
DOES THE ADULT QUALIFY?
The Arc of Adams County only provides advocacy services to people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). The criteria for IDD are listed:
- Diagnosis of IDD has occurred before the age of 22
- IQ of 70 or less (measured by specific testing) and/or
- Adaptive (daily living) skills that are equivalent to an IQ of 70 or less
- Autism*
- Brain injury before the age of 22
- Cerebral palsy
- Down syndrome
- Fetal alcohol syndrome
- Spina bifida
- a diagnosis of an intellectual disability
*Not all adults with Autism qualify for our services

TRAINING & EVENTS
In addition to providing disability information and resources, direct advocacy, and systemic advocacy, we also provide education and trainings for self-advocates, providers of services, and community organizations. Other trainings include: self-advocacy, community/victim/first responder, conflict resolution, If I Were You and You Were Me, services & supports.
