Benefits & Services

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. Parents or guardians can apply for disabled children under age 18.

To apply for Social Security and SSI disability benefits online, visit www.socialsecurity.gov/disability. If you cannot apply for SSI online, call 1-800-772-1213 to set up an in-office or telephone appointment with a Social Security representative.

Rocky Mountain Human Services (RMHS) is an agency that coordinates services provided to people with IDD who live in Adams County.

Education

Each school district offers a transition program for students 18-21.  This program helps to prepare students for adult life after they leave high school.  It can be a bridge between school adult life, including higher education or training, employment, independent living and community participation.

The Colorado Initiative for Inclusive Higher Education (IN!) is a service at designated college campuses for students with IDD who wish to experience higher education.

Legal

Legal Guardianship of an adult is a court process by which a person is given legal responsibility for an adult. Appointing a Guardian in Colorado requires the filing of a petition and approval by the court.

A Special Needs Trust is a legal trust developed to provide financial support without jeopardizing public benefits.  Contact a Special Needs Trust attorney for more information.  The ABLE plan helps individuals to save money while preserving their SSI and Medicaid benefits.

Self-Advocacy

Self-determination is an idea that includes people choosing and setting their own goals, be­ing involved in making life decisions, self-advocating, and working to reach their goals.
