We are people united by a common determination -- To give everyone the opportunity to live, learn, work and play in their own community. The Arc of Adams County has been around since 1957. We offer advocacy services, public education awareness, trainings, and more. We are part of a nationwide voluntary organization whose members are devoted to improving the lives of persons with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) without regard to race, creed, geographical location or degree of disability. We are united to assure that every person has a chance to develop to their fullest potential and to enjoy the full range of human and civil rights. The Arc of Adams County is a local chapter unit of The Arc of Colorado and The Arc of the United States. Arcs were first organized in 1950 by friends and parents of persons with I/DD to help develop services and supports for people. Today there are over 245,000 members affiliated with 1500 state and local member units in all 50 states. The Arc of Colorado provides advocacy in areas of the state that do not have a local unit, provides information and referral and addresses system change issues in Colorado. The state and local units are affiliated with The Arc of the United States which provides access to information and experts on public policy, encourages research and provides continual updates with respect to national issues.

The Arc of Adams County is a member of Mountain States Employee Council (MSEC).

Our mission is to advocate for adults and children with intellectual/developmental disabilities so that they can live, learn, work and play in environments that are inclusive, interdependent and encourage individual and family empowerment.

The Arc of Adams County staff is the stamina of the organization as the majority of the services provided are very staff time intensive. The Board of Directors creates the presence of the organization and helps represent the membership and the people we support.

  • Definition of a Intellectual/Developmental Disability (I/DD)

(I/DD) means a disability that is manifested before the person reaches twenty-two years of age, which constitutes a substantial disability to the affected individual, and is attributable to mental retardation or related conditions which include cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism, or other neurological conditions when such conditions result in impairment of general intellectual functioning or adaptive behavior similar to that of a person with mental retardation. Unless otherwise specifically stated, the federal definition of “Intellectual/Developmental Disability” found in 42, U.S.C 6000, et seq., shall not apply.

  1. Impairment of general intellectual functioning means that the person has been determined to have an intellectual quotient equivalent which is two or more standard deviations below the mean (70 or less assuming a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15), as measured by an instrument which is standardized, appropriate to the nature of the person's disability, and administered by a qualified professional. The standard error of measurement of the instrument should be considered when determining the intellectual quotient equivalent. When an individual's general intellectual functioning cannot be measured by a standardized instrument, then the assessment of a qualified professional shall be used.
  2. Adaptive behavior means that the person has overall adaptive behavior which is significantly limited in two or more skill areas (communication, self-care, home living, social skills, community use, self-direction, health and safety, functional academics, leisure, and work), as measured by an instrument which is standardized, appropriate to the person's living environment, and administered and clinically determined by a qualified professional. These adaptive behavior limitations are a direct result of, or are significantly influenced by, the person’s substantial intellectual deficits and may not be attributable to only a physical or sensory impairment or mental illness.  “Substantial intellectual deficits” means and intellectual quotient that is between 71-75 assuming a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, as measured by an instrument which is standardized, appropriate to the nature of the person’s disability, and administered by a qualified professional. The standard error of measurement of the instrument should be considered when determining the intellectual quotient equivalent. Eff 10/01/2008.
